UN Inquiry Urges Release of Detained Palestinian Doctor

A recent United Nations investigation expressed concern over allegations of mistreatment against a well-known Palestinian physician taken into custody by the Israeli military in December 2024 and still detained in Israel. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, has called for the immediate release of Hussam Abu Safiya, who serves as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Various rights organizations and Abu Safiya’s legal representative have raised alarms about his precarious health condition and his continued detention without formal charges, as reported by Physicians for Human Rights Israel. The UN inquiry highlighted that the treatment of Palestinian detainees by Israeli Prison Service guards raises serious doubts about compliance with international laws, potentially constituting international crimes leading to Dr. Abu Safiya’s deteriorating medical state.

In response, an Israel Prison Service spokesperson refuted the allegations, labeling them as false and baseless. Although not directly naming Abu Safiya, the spokesperson dismissed claims of mistreatment towards him and other medical professionals in prison. Abu Safiya’s lawyer recently voiced concerns about his client’s health being jeopardized and alleged daily abuse. During a video-linked Supreme Court session in June, Abu Safiya appeared visibly thinner, raising further concerns about his well-being.

The UN inquiry emphasized that the treatment of Abu Safiya by Israeli authorities mirrors a broader pattern of violations documented in previous reports. Meanwhile, a separate UN rights body condemned Israel’s detention of Abu Safiya as arbitrary and demanded his immediate release, citing violations of various human rights declarations and covenants.

In a tragic turn of events, Israeli airstrikes and gunfire claimed the lives of at least nine Palestinians, including two children aged 10 and six, in the Gaza Strip. Health officials reported casualties caused by Israeli attacks near a school in Gaza City and a tent for displaced persons in Khan Younis, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The Israeli military acknowledged targeting militants in Gaza City but denied awareness of civilian casualties.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in numerous casualties and continues to escalate despite international efforts to maintain a ceasefire. The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of violating agreements, leading to further loss of life and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
