The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has issued a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees stated that significant differences exist between the two parties regarding crucial matters.
Alia Hussain, chair of the union’s WestJet group, emphasized the necessity for changes and the union’s efforts to secure a just agreement. Hussain expressed hope for avoiding a strike, mentioning the ongoing negotiations to resolve the issues.
In response to the strike notice, WestJet replied by issuing a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline, Canada’s second-largest, affirmed its commitment to active negotiations to reach a resolution.
WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech acknowledged the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the situation and highlighted the importance of minimizing disruptions to the airline’s operations. While the union’s notice does not guarantee a strike, potential job action could begin early Sunday if an agreement is not reached.
Passengers impacted by the potential strike have been offered flexibility to change or cancel flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4 without fees. Flights operated by WestJet Encore and partner airlines like Delta Air Lines are expected to continue unaffected by the strike.
In the event of flight disruptions, affected passengers will receive refunds or alternative accommodations, as necessary. Additionally, the two parties have established protocols for managing aircraft grounding and ensuring the safe return of cabin crew during a work stoppage.
An unresolved issue central to the union is the compensation for ground duties, which they claim are unpaid. WestJet argues that all duties are covered through a credit hour system rather than hourly wages.
Aviation management expert John Gradek from McGill University estimated significant financial losses for WestJet in the event of a strike, particularly during a peak travel period. The airline operates a substantial number of daily flights, carrying thousands of passengers regularly.
