The cost of a TV licence is set to increase to £180 starting in April. A TV licence is required to watch or record live TV, or access content on BBC iPlayer. However, if you only watch shows on catch-up using streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, you do not need a TV licence.
If you watch live shows through these services, a TV licence is necessary. Failure to have a TV licence when watching programmes that require one could result in a fine of up to £1,000. If you no longer require your TV licence before it expires and have at least one month left on it, you may be eligible for a refund.
Additionally, refunds are available for individuals eligible for an over 75 or blind concession. Remember that watching TV programmes that require a TV licence without having one may lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
