NASA’s Artemis 2 moon mission faces a delay following the discovery of a significant issue during testing. Engineers identified a “liquid hydrogen leak” at a core stage interface during a wet dress rehearsal on Monday. The leak was detected during tanking, leading to a pause in operations for adjustments.
The test was stopped during the final countdown, approximately five minutes before launch, due to an increased leak rate, as per NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. Other issues included the need to retorque a valve related to pressurizing the Orion crew module hatch and brief drops in audio communications. Some equipment was affected by cold temperatures, requiring attention on launch day.
Isaacman emphasized the importance of such challenges in the testing phase to ensure a successful launch. NASA is now targeting March for the earliest possible launch window, pending another wet dress rehearsal. Agency leaders will discuss the test results in a news conference on Tuesday.
The Artemis program aims to send astronauts for lunar exploration, economic benefits, and to pave the way for crewed missions to Mars. The upcoming 10-day mission will be the first to orbit the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. The subsequent Artemis 3 mission intends to land humans on the moon, along with the construction of the Lunar Gateway space station.
Artemis I, launched in November 2022, tested the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket by sending an empty Orion crew capsule around the moon. The SLS, with its core stage containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, is crucial for lunar missions. The Artemis 2 crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The mission’s objectives align with the promise of returning to the moon and future plans for lunar exploration. The mission will end with Orion’s splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, with recovery operations by NASA and the US Navy.
