Elon Musk recently posted AI-generated images of Sir Keir Starmer in swimsuits, while a platform known as X faces potential closure in the UK due to concerns about the creation of deepfake pornography.
The billionaire shared two AI-generated images of the Prime Minister on X, commenting that there were attempts to stifle free speech. This post followed a query from a user about the PM’s interest in Grok, X’s AI chatbot, despite other AI platforms like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT also producing bikini images of individuals upon request.
Ofcom, the regulatory authority, initiated urgent communication with X after reports emerged that users had utilized Grok to generate non-consensual sexualized images, including those of minors. Ofcom is now conducting a rapid evaluation of the chatbot’s operations.
Liz Kendall, the Technology Secretary, expressed support for blocking access to X in the UK due to its failure to comply with online safety regulations. She condemned the manipulation of images of women and children and demanded swift action from X to address the issue.
In response, X restricted the image function to paying users only for specific interactions, while other methods of image modification and creation remained accessible. Kendall emphasized the need for immediate action and expected updates from Ofcom shortly.
The UK government criticized X for offering the creation of unlawful images as a premium service, dismissing it as inadequate. Musk criticized the government’s censorship intentions and highlighted that other AI programs also generate non-sexualized bikini images. The US legislator Anna Paulina Luna warned of potential sanctions against the UK if X was banned.
X emphasized its commitment to combating illegal content, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by taking down such material, suspending accounts, and cooperating with authorities. The platform warned that users engaging in illegal content creation through Grok would face consequences.
Grok, a free AI assistant with premium features, responds to user prompts on X by tagging it in posts. It has faced criticism for creating inappropriate content, prompting legal actions against individuals involved in online criminal activities.
Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom has the authority to impose fines, pursue legal actions, or collaborate with service providers to block websites that violate regulations. Compliance with the law is crucial to avoid penalties and maintain online safety standards.
