A tragic incident unfolded in Helston’s Mawgan area as Storm Goretti wreaked havoc in Cornwall earlier this week, leading to the death of a man trapped in a caravan crushed by a falling tree. The victim, a man in his 50s, lost his life in the Thursday evening calamity, confirmed by Devon and Cornwall Police. The storm unleashed winds reaching up to 99mph in the region.
Authorities stated that the man’s passing is not treated as suspicious, and his relatives have been notified. The Met Office issued a rare red warning for wind in parts of the South West, alongside amber and yellow alerts for snow, ice, wind, and rain across the UK.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident on Thursday night, where the tree had fallen on the caravan. The following day, efforts were made to safely remove the tree and gather further details at the scene. Sadly, the man was found deceased inside the caravan, prompting support for his family from law enforcement. The death is deemed non-suspicious, and preparations for a coroner’s report are underway.
Yellow warnings for snow and ice remain active across significant parts of the UK for the current and following day. Conditions are expected to gradually improve, offering a brief respite with intermittent sunny spells on Saturday. Nonetheless, northern regions and Wales may experience wintry showers, including snow on elevated terrains.
The lull on Saturday will be short-lived as a new weather front approaches from the west on Sunday, bringing the potential for disruptive snowfall, as per the Met Office. Chief Forecaster Steve Willington cautioned about accumulating snow in Scotland and northern England, with low temperatures heightening the risk of ice. The forecast predicts 2-5cm of snow at lower levels and up to 10-20cm on higher ground, likely causing further disruptions in areas already hit by severe snowfall. Central and southern England, as well as Wales, are expected to receive rainfall on Sunday.
