“Trump Threatens Military Intervention in Minnesota Protests”

President Donald Trump has issued a warning to utilize the US military in Minnesota, citing the Insurrection Act to stop ongoing protests. The rarely implemented Insurrection Act allows the President to deploy military forces within the country to suppress rebellion or violence, bypassing state and local authorities. Trump’s potential use of the military against American citizens would mark a significant escalation, reminiscent of George W. Bush invoking the act during the 1992 LA riots.

Historically, Lyndon B Johnson employed the act twice in the 1960s to address riots in Detroit and unrest following Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. The act has only been used in specific instances of widespread violence where local law enforcement faces challenges. Trump took to Truth Social to express his intent, emphasizing the need to stop alleged attacks on ICE personnel in Minnesota.

Trump’s claims regarding protests against ICE operations being “fake” and orchestrated by “professionals” lack substantiation, aligning with his administration’s narrative of coordinated dissent by “radical leftist” groups. The Department of Homeland Security’s actions in Minnesota, including over 2,000 arrests since December, have drawn criticism for targeting legally protesting individuals.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has described the current situation as unsustainable, noting the overwhelming federal presence that has alarmed residents. Recent events, such as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shooting a Minneapolis man, have heightened tensions in the city. The response to the shooting saw clashes between protesters and federal officers, leading to unrest in the area.

Police Chief Brian O’Hara declared the gathering as unlawful, urging people to disperse. Subsequently, the situation calmed down, with only a small group of demonstrators and law enforcement remaining at the scene. Demonstrations have become frequent in Minneapolis following the shooting incident, with confrontations occurring between agents and residents demanding their departure.
