Jenny Agutter, known for her role as Sister Julienne in “Call The Midwife,” recently provided an update on her health as the new series prepares to air. Despite feeling “perfectly fit” before the BBC drama’s 2020 Christmas special, she was unexpectedly hit by shingles.
While the infection typically lasts about four weeks, Jenny continues to experience discomfort even five years later. Describing it as an itchy and bruised sensation around her face on one side, she mentioned feeling it across her eyebrow and forehead.
Despite the lingering effects of shingles, the actress, also recognized for her role in Red Dwarf, expressed gratitude for her overall good health. She mentioned being thankful for her ability to walk, enjoy food, and maintain proper bodily functions, despite the inevitable morning creaks and groans.
Reflecting on her shingles battle, Jenny recalled the painful and challenging experience, attributing it possibly to stress. She shared details of the symptoms she faced, including a rash, nerve pain, and sensitivity to light for a month.
The NHS outlines that shingles typically presents as a rash on one side of the body, commonly on the chest and abdomen but can appear elsewhere like the face, eyes, or genitals. If someone suspects they have shingles, seeking advice from a pharmacist or NHS 111 is recommended.
Turning 73 in December after wrapping up filming for the latest series of “Call The Midwife,” Jenny has no plans to slow down. She expressed her love for the stimulating nature of work, highlighting the joy she finds in collaborative projects, being on set, and witnessing the behind-the-scenes magic unfold.
The upcoming season of “Call The Midwife” delves into 1971, featuring characters embracing Women’s Lib by burning their bras outside Nonnatus House. The first episode airs tonight on BBC One at 8 pm.
