A prominent al-Qaeda operative was eliminated in US airstrikes in Syria following an ISIS assault that resulted in the deaths of three American individuals. Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, believed to be a key figure in the terror attack, was described by the Pentagon as a skilled terrorist leader with intentions to harm the US.
Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of US Central Command, emphasized the US’s commitment to pursuing terrorists who target American citizens and military personnel. The airstrike conducted by US Central Command on January 16 successfully eliminated Al-Jasim, who was directly linked to the ISIS gunman responsible for the fatal attack in Palmyra, Syria, on December 13.
Named Hawkeye Strike, the operation involved striking over 100 ISIS infrastructure and weapon site targets with more than 200 precision munitions. US authorities reported that more than 300 ISIS operatives had been captured, and over 20 had been killed in Syria over the past year to neutralize threats to US and regional security.
On December 19, the Trump administration authorized military strikes in Syria to eradicate Islamic State group fighters and weapon facilities. President Trump warned terrorists of severe consequences if they threatened or attacked the US, reinforcing the nation’s unwavering stance against such aggression.
The recent military offensive in Syria signals a strategic shift in US foreign policy towards focusing on the Western Hemisphere, particularly in Venezuela and the Caribbean. The US has redirected resources from the Middle East to support these objectives, exemplified by the deployment of an advanced aircraft carrier to South American waters from the Mediterranean Sea.
In response to the military actions, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reiterated the US’s commitment to defending its people under President Trump’s leadership. The US officials hinted at further strikes in central Syria to retaliate against terrorist threats but clarified that it was not the start of a war, rather a response to ensure national security.
