Over 30 million tons of litter are discarded throughout the United Kingdom annually, causing visible eyesores in communities, endangering wildlife, and incurring an estimated £1 billion in cleanup expenses yearly.
Fortunately, Keep Britain Tidy, an environmental charity, is reintroducing their Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean initiatives from March 13 to 29. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are expected to participate in sprucing up our streets.
Since its inception as a one-time event in 2016, a group of dedicated Litter Heroes have demonstrated their commitment to their neighborhoods by committing to picking up more than 4.5 million bags of trash from various locations like streets, parks, fields, riverbanks, and beaches across Britain.
The Great British Spring Clean is scheduled for March 13-29. Interested participants can register on keepbritaintidy.org and declare the number of trash bags they intend to collect.
Individuals, groups, or schools can take part by providing basic information such as name, email address, postcode, and the anticipated number of bags to be gathered.
Last year, nearly 400,000 volunteers engaged in the annual litter collection, accumulating around 462,000 bags of waste. A survey of participants revealed that 95% believed their actions significantly improved their local surroundings.
Among the advocates this year is civil servant Emdad Rahman, designated as one of Keep Britain Tidy’s 200 Litter Hero Ambassadors, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Emdad operates the Little Litter League, an initiative that encourages young people and families to value the environment through regular clean-up sessions.
Emdad emphasizes the importance of education in fostering lasting change and aims to instill a sense of responsibility in the youth. Joining him is Sarah Drakes, sustainability manager at Nestlé Confectionery UK&I, who has been backing the Great British Spring Clean for six years.
Major companies like KFC UK&I, Mars Wrigley, and others have been long-term collaborators in the campaign, contributing resources and support to reduce litter and maintain community cleanliness.
The Great British Spring Clean offers an opportunity for individuals to contribute positively to their communities by committing to collect at least one bag of trash starting February 13.
Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, the chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, commended the efforts of volunteers like Emdad in removing millions of bags of litter, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in combating littering.
Laura Chow, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, praised the volunteers for their dedication to protecting the environment, underlining the collective responsibility in preserving nature.
The ongoing campaign is made possible by the support of People’s Postcode Lottery players, media partners, and various corporate sponsors, including KFC UK&I, Mars Wrigley, McDonald’s, Nestlé, Pepsi Max, and Walkers.
The Great British Spring Clean encompasses Spring Clean Cymru in Wales (March 13-29) and Spring Clean Scotland in Scotland (March 13-April 24), providing region-specific clean-up opportunities for residents.
