Team GB has made a triumphant entry into the Winter Olympics as Matt Weston clinched the gold medal in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, had been a standout contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and started off impressively by leading after the initial two heats. His times of 56.21 and 55.88 in the first two runs combined for an overall time of 1:52.09 before he delivered another impressive time of 55.63 in the third heat.
The highlight of Weston’s performance was his final run, setting a track record with a time of 55.61. Overwhelmed with emotion, Weston celebrated his historic win with teammate Marcus Wyatt and the Team GB coaches. This victory marked a remarkable comeback for Weston, who had finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics.
Although Wyatt improved on the second day in Italy, he finished in seventh place with a total time of 3:45.77. Weston’s success ensured Team GB’s presence on the Winter Olympics medal table, with German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer securing silver and bronze medals, respectively.
