“School Closures Expected as Heavy Snowstorm Hits UK”

Tomorrow, numerous schools will shut down due to the heavy snowfall expected to arrive overnight.

In response to an amber snow warning issued from 8pm today until 9am tomorrow, various schools in the Midlands and Wales have declared closures for Friday. Shropshire alone will see more than twenty schools not opening their doors. The UK has already felt the impact of Storm Goretti, bringing intense snowfall and gusts of up to 99mph, causing power outages affecting thousands in south-west England on Thursday evening.

The Met Office highlighted in its amber alert that the storm-related rain will transition into heavy snow. This transformation may lead to power disruptions and isolate rural communities. Snow accumulations ranging from 10 to 15cm are anticipated in the affected regions, with higher ground areas in Wales and the Peak District expecting up to 30cm of snow.

Additionally, a yellow snow warning remains effective until midday tomorrow, encompassing the same regions along with parts of northern and southern England, including London.

Northern and eastern Scotland, along with northern England, are under a second yellow warning for snow and ice, valid until midday tomorrow. Over 250 schools in Scotland will stay closed, with Aberdeenshire having 150 closures, accompanied by shutdowns in the Highlands, Aberdeen, and Moray.

Meanwhile, due to strong winds, numerous schools in Cornwall closed early today. A red weather warning, a rare occurrence for the county and the Isles of Scilly, led to this decision. Notably, wind speeds of 99mph were recorded at St Mary’s Airport on the Isles of Scilly, setting a new record for the site, as confirmed by the Met Office.

Neil Armstrong, the Met Office Chief Forecaster, cautioned about the persistent “violent gusts” expected for up to three hours. He highlighted the issuance of a red severe weather warning for wind in the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall due to Storm Goretti. The storm is predicted to bring exceptionally strong gusts exceeding 100mph within the red warning area.

Armstrong further mentioned the likelihood of heavy snow affecting Wales, the Midlands, and parts of northern England overnight and into Friday morning. He advised the public to stay updated on the forecasts and follow messages from local authorities due to the severe and complex weather conditions expected.
