Labour’s metropolitan mayors have expressed solidarity with the Mayor of Minneapolis following the controversial ICE shooting that has ignited anger within the city.
Mayor Jacob Frey gained attention for his swift reaction to the shooting of Renee Good, where he demanded that ICE leave Minnesota immediately.
Newly released footage, captured from the ICE agent’s perspective, reveals that Good, a mother of three, was attempting to drive around and away from the agent when he fired three shots at her while using derogatory language towards her.
The video contradicts assertions made by Donald Trump and JD Vance, who claimed that Good was intentionally trying to run over the agent and that he acted in self-defense.
In a joint statement, Labour’s metropolitan mayors praised Mayor Frey and other U.S. mayors for their compassionate and fact-based leadership during this tragic event, emphasizing the importance of protecting the dignity and human rights of residents.
The statement, endorsed by prominent mayors including Sadiq Khan of London and Andy Burnham of Manchester, highlighted the crucial role mayors play in safeguarding communities.
Protesters gathered outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to be housing ICE agents, creating disturbances throughout the night to disrupt their rest.
Despite claims by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin that the new video supports the officer’s self-defense argument, Mayor Frey dismissed such claims as baseless.
Law enforcement experts noted that while the video did not change their views on the use of force, it raised concerns about the officer’s training standards.
The footage depicted the officer holding a gun in one hand and a cellphone in the other while filming, prompting questions about the training protocols that permit such actions.
Experts pointed out that the officer’s actions in the video suggested that he did not perceive Good as a threat, further fueling the debate on the officer’s response.
The officer involved, Ross, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran with extensive experience in Border Patrol and ICE, had previously been injured in a similar incident last year.
