A tragic incident unfolded in Columbia, Missouri, where a man, identified as Michael Ryan Burke, lost his life during what he believed to be a genuine transaction on the Facebook Marketplace. Burke, a 42-year-old U.S. Marine veteran, was fatally shot at his residence while attempting to sell his iPhone, according to the Columbia Police Department.
The harrowing event took place around 8:15 pm on Sunday, January 18, when authorities responded to reports of gunshots at Ridgemont Court. Upon arrival, officers discovered Burke inside the house with critical gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the attack, Burke managed to contact emergency services and provide a description of the assailants before his passing. As he awaited help, he sent heartfelt messages to his mother and sister, expressing his love and bidding them farewell.
Subsequently, on Tuesday, January 20, law enforcement arrested three 18-year-olds and one juvenile male in connection with Burke’s death. The suspects, identified as Kobe Aust, Joseph Crane, Alexis Baumann, and the juvenile, face charges including second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary. They are currently held without bail at the Boone County Jail, with the juvenile detained at the Boone County Juvenile Office.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities examined Burke’s Facebook messages, revealing communications related to the sale of his iPhone 15 Pro. Burke had shared his address with one of the suspects, who confirmed arrival at the residence shortly before the tragic incident occurred.
Jerry Reifeiss, a close friend of Burke, emphasized his heroic military background and compassionate nature, highlighting Burke’s final acts of reaching out to his loved ones and providing crucial information to seek justice for the perpetrators.
