Greenlandic Soldier Warns Against US Invasion Plans

A Greenlandic soldier serving with US forces in Afghanistan has indirectly criticized President Donald Trump for his interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark. Soldier Salik Augustinussen cautioned US troops against following orders to invade Greenland, highlighting the unity displayed by Danish soldiers and American allies following the 9/11 attacks. Denmark, a strong US and NATO ally, lost 43 troops in Operation Enduring Freedom, demonstrating unwavering support. Despite this, Trump’s remarks about Greenland’s security capabilities and his annexation threats have caused controversy.

Augustinussen emphasized the shared history of cooperation between soldiers from Denmark, the US, and NATO, particularly in Afghanistan post-9/11. He expressed concern that an invasion of Greenland would be an attack on NATO members, Denmark, and the soldiers who had stood together in times of need. The soldier’s message urged Americans to reconsider any plans to invade Greenland, emphasizing the repercussions on NATO alliances and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump’s intentions to annex Greenland have faced criticism, even within his own party. While the US has previously withdrawn troops from Greenland since the Cold War, Danish officials have not opposed the possibility of increased US military presence in the region. However, Trump’s insistence on annexation has raised concerns and uncertainties among organizations supporting veterans, such as Veteran Project Greenland. The organization emphasized Greenland’s sovereignty and condemned the disrespect shown towards the Greenlandic people and veterans of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and that its future should be determined by its people. Polls indicate that the majority of Greenlanders are against joining the US, preferring to remain part of Denmark or pursue independence. This sentiment reflects the strong attachment Greenlanders have to their autonomy and national identity.
