A depraved murderer has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for killing his estranged spouse and desecrating her body.
Zarbab Ali, 29, will spend the remainder of his days behind bars for the brutal slaying of Rachael Castillo, 25, with whom he shared two children. Castillo had initiated divorce proceedings, which were nearing finalization when Ali launched a vicious attack on her while she was alone at her sister’s residence where she and her sons were residing.
Entering the unlocked front door, Ali lurked in the dark and ambushed Castillo in a narrow hallway, stabbing her multiple times in the neck and chest, as revealed by the Ventura County District Attorney.
After the calculated murder, Ali wrapped the victim’s body in a blanket, attempted to conceal the crime scene, and then transported her in his car’s trunk to Littlerock, California, where he buried her in a shallow grave using a recently acquired shovel.
Upon discovering signs of violence upon her return, Castillo’s sister contacted authorities. Despite her absence, personal effects were found at the scene. Police located bloody items nearby and gathered witness testimonies placing Ali at the apartment complex.
Under the cover of darkness, Ali returned to the burial site and sexually assaulted Castillo’s remains before reburial. His incriminating police interrogation video confession was presented during the trial.
The victim’s remains were unearthed on Nov. 13, 2022, in a desolate location near Littlerock, leading to Ali’s prompt arrest on the same day. Ali pleaded guilty to an array of charges including mutilation and murder, according to the Ventura County District Attorney, with the heinous act occurring on Nov. 10, 2022.
During the sentencing, poignant victim impact statements were delivered, portraying Castillo as more than just a victim but as a cherished mother, sister, daughter, and friend with promising aspirations. Family members lamented her untimely demise, emphasizing her dreams for her children’s futures and the profound loss they suffered.
Directly addressing the defendant, speakers condemned Ali’s cowardly actions and highlighted the irreversible trauma inflicted upon the innocent children left behind, underscoring the lasting repercussions of his violent choices.
