“UK Govt Allocates £31M for LGBTQ Veterans Compensation”

The government has allocated over £31 million to compensate 949 LGBTQ veterans impacted by the historical ban on gay individuals serving in the armed forces. The Ministry of Defence has bolstered its payments team and introduced an automated processing system to expedite claims under the Financial Recognition Scheme.

The ban, which persisted until 2000 despite the decriminalization of homosexuality, led to the dismissal of numerous individuals from the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF. Many experienced harassment, bullying, forced outing, and even imprisonment due to their sexual orientation.

In response, Louise Sandher-Jones MP, Minister for Veterans and People, condemned the mistreatment of LGBTQ personnel from 1967 to 2000 as shameful. The government aims to rectify the historical injustices faced by LGBTQ personnel by enhancing support through the Financial Recognition Scheme.

The scheme acknowledges the unjust treatment of LGBTQ personnel during the specified period and is set to conclude in December 2026. Elderly applicants, those with severe health conditions, and individuals enduring significant financial challenges are being prioritized.

Fighting With Pride, alongside the Mirror, has advocated for the recognition, support, and compensation of LGBTQ veterans. Claire Ashton, a trans woman and former gunner in the Royal Artillery, welcomed the payments as a significant milestone, emphasizing the importance of the government acknowledging its past wrongdoings.

Earlier this year, King Charles paid tribute to LGBTQ+ armed forces veterans at a new memorial, symbolizing recognition for those affected by the ban. While progress has been made, the LGBTQ+ Armed Forces charity, Fighting With Pride, emphasized the need for improved decision-making processes and further support for veterans excluded from reparations.

Chief Executive Peter Gibson urged the government to enhance publicity campaigns to ensure all eligible veterans are aware of the scheme to prevent anyone from missing out on compensation opportunities.
