“Wetherspoon Partners with University of Birmingham for New Pub ‘Joe’s'”

Wetherspoon reveals plans for a new pub set to open at the University of Birmingham in partnership with the Guild of Students. The pub, named Joe’s after the university’s clock tower, will maintain operations under the Guild of Students’ management.

Scheduled to launch in Easter 2026 after a comprehensive renovation, the establishment will offer the complete Wetherspoon food and beverage selection, including special weekly deals like the Thursday Curry Club. This initiative follows the successful launch of Wetherspoon’s first university pub at Hull University in 2022.

John Hutson, Wetherspoon’s CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with the Guild of Students, aiming to establish Joe’s Bar as a thriving venue.

Antonia Listrat, the President of the University of Birmingham Guild of Students, highlighted the advantages for students, emphasizing the value-for-money offerings and increased job prospects within the bar. The surplus generated through this partnership will be reinvested to support student activities, enhancing the overall student experience.

As part of its expansion strategy, Wetherspoon plans to open six new pubs by mid-January. Additionally, the recent launch of Wetherspoon’s Christmas menu features a budget-friendly turkey dinner, priced at £13.99 with a soft drink or £15.52 with an alcoholic beverage. The menu will be available until December 31.

Despite market challenges, Tim Martin, Wetherspoon’s chairman, aims to keep price hikes minimal, acknowledging the impact of tax increases on pricing within the pub industry. Martin affirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining competitive pricing for its patrons.
