“UK Faces Car Theft Crisis as 76% of Cases Remain Unsolved”

A recent report has exposed that a significant number of car theft cases in the UK remain unsolved. Statistics from the House of Commons library show that 76% of car theft incidents went unresolved last year, with the Metropolitan police force having the lowest success rate at 88%.

Several police forces, including the British Transport Police, South Yorkshire, City of London, Sussex, and Warwickshire, reported that over 80% of car thefts went unsolved. In total, 35 out of 44 police forces in England and Wales had a high rate of 60% of unsolved cases.

According to the Home Office, vehicle crime decreased by 12% in the year leading up to June 2025, with a 7% drop in vehicle theft. Additionally, new legislation is being introduced to outlaw electronic devices that can bypass car security measures, carrying a penalty of up to five years in prison for offenders.

In response to the alarming statistics, the Liberal Democrats are advocating for the establishment of a specialized unit within the National Crime Agency to tackle organized car crime networks. Max Wilkinson MP, the party’s home affairs spokesperson, emphasized the need for stronger support for crime victims and criticized past government cuts to police forces.

The Home Office echoed the concerns, acknowledging the severe impact of vehicle theft on individuals, families, and businesses. They emphasized the government’s commitment to combating vehicle theft through legislative measures, police training, and collaboration with industry stakeholders to address vehicle security vulnerabilities.
