“Former Labour Party Adviser Sues Trump Administration Over US Visa Sanctions”

A former adviser to the Labour Party has initiated legal proceedings against the administration of Donald Trump after being among five Europeans subjected to visa sanctions. Imran Ahmed, an associate of Keir Starmer’s senior adviser in No10, Morgan McSweeney, was singled out by the US for his involvement with the Centre of Countering Digital Hate (CDHC). The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, accused Mr. Ahmed of spearheading efforts to pressure American platforms to censor opposing viewpoints, resulting in his exclusion from the United States.

Mr. Ahmed has filed a lawsuit against Marco Rubio, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, alleging an unconstitutional plot to detain and expel him from the US. He stated that his life’s purpose is to safeguard children from the perils of unregulated social media and artificial intelligence while combatting online antisemitism.

As the CEO of the CCDH, Mr. Ahmed, a former Labour Party adviser from Manchester, resides in the US with his American wife and child. The legal action argues that he is facing repercussions for the CCDH’s research on social media company policies, including those of Elon Musk’s enterprises. The lawsuit contends that there are no valid grounds for Mr. Ahmed’s immigration detention and highlights the unconstitutional nature of his potential arrest.

Roberta Kaplan, representing Mr. Ahmed, emphasized the injustice of his situation, where he is compelled to fight against his deportation instead of celebrating Christmas with his family. In a late-night decision, a US District Judge granted Imran Ahmed a temporary restraining order, halting any impending arrest or detention.

Mr. Ahmed, who founded the CCDH while advising Labour MP Hilary Benn, has spoken about the organization’s inception and his motivation to combat antisemitism and extremist ideologies. Another British executive, Clare Melford, who oversees the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), was also among the individuals targeted with US visa sanctions. A spokesperson for GDI condemned the visa sanctions as an assault on free speech and an act of governmental censorship.
