Virgin Media has exciting news for some broadband customers awaiting faster internet speeds. The company has announced that certain users will soon benefit from a complimentary upgrade to their home routers.
According to a recent blog post by Virgin Media, a group of customers will have the opportunity to transition to a more advanced technology without any additional charges. The upgrade will specifically target individuals still utilizing the older Hub 3 and Hub 4 devices.
These outdated routers lack the enhanced performance found in the newer Hub 5, which features upgraded Wi-Fi 6 technology for quicker and more reliable connections. Virgin Media plans to contact eligible customers via email gradually throughout 2026 as the upgrade is implemented.
Virgin Media described the Hub 5 as its latest router, equipped with Wi-Fi 6 technology and seven internal antennas to provide stronger and more consistent coverage throughout homes. The company anticipates that thousands of customers will benefit from the upgrade this year.
If eligible, Virgin Media will reach out directly to customers, eliminating the need for proactive steps until receiving communication from the company. Customers can also verify their eligibility by accessing their My Virgin Media account online.
To identify the router model, users can check the sticker on the back or bottom of the device, or view the router information on the Virgin Media Connect app.
Upgrading the router can significantly enhance the broadband experience, offering broader Wi-Fi coverage, improved stability, and support for future updates. The Hub 5 is built to accommodate faster Gig1 speeds, resulting in quicker downloads and streaming. Gig1 speeds enable users to download a full HD movie in less than 40 seconds, exceeding the UK average by over 10 times.
Wi-Fi 6 represents the latest wireless networking technology, delivering faster speeds, increased efficiency, and enhanced performance in busy environments. It can support multiple connected devices simultaneously, offering superior performance across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Wi-Fi 6 is energy-efficient, making it suitable for modern smart homes with numerous connected devices and high data requirements.
While homes can now access even more advanced Wi-Fi 7 technology, Wi-Fi 6 remains ideal for the average user’s needs.
