“Peace Negotiations in Ukraine Enter Critical Phase”

No. 10 has mentioned that peace negotiations in Ukraine are in a critical phase, urging Vladimir Putin to halt the violence and participate constructively. This statement followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who suggested that an agreement to end the conflict is nearing completion after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida. Despite progress, both leaders acknowledged the existence of challenging issues that need resolution.

Keir Starmer’s spokesperson emphasized the importance of ending the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine for achieving a lasting peace agreement. Efforts have been ongoing with Ukrainian and US officials to finalize a deal that prevents future Russian invasions. Zelensky disclosed that the US is offering Ukraine security assurances for 15 years, but he prefers a commitment of up to 50 years to deter Russian aggression.

Negotiations are anticipated to intensify next month, coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion. Although specifics of the security guarantees remain undisclosed, Zelensky mentioned the involvement of partners, potentially posing a disagreement as Putin opposes the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue their advances in eastern and southern Ukrainian regions.

President Trump expressed optimism about progress in the negotiations, stating that both parties are closer than ever to reaching a resolution. Plans are in place for European leaders and a Ukrainian delegation to meet with Trump for further discussions in January, potentially in Washington. Putin is expected to engage in talks with President Trump soon, but no indication suggests direct communication with Zelensky.
