A substantial reward has been announced for details concerning an individual observed beheading a sea lion as part of a disturbing pattern. The National Marine Fisheries Service in California is offering $20,000 to anyone aiding in the capture of a middle-aged man who was seen cutting off the animal’s head and placing it in a plastic bag at Point Pinos Beach. The suspect, described as a white male in his late 50s, approximately 5ft 9in tall, bald with a full beard, was wielding a hunting knife during the gruesome incident.
The NOAA has released an image of the perpetrator and is appealing for information related to the incident. They are offering a $20,000 reward for details leading to an arrest, penalty assessment, or conviction. The Marine Mammal Protection Act strictly prohibits any harm or disturbance to sea lions, and violations are subject to civil or criminal prosecution.
This incident follows a similar case where a man in his 30s was spotted removing a dead sea lion’s head in Bodega Bay village and fleeing on an e-bike. A reward was also offered in that case, but the outcome of the investigation remains undisclosed. Recently, San Carlos Beach in Monterey had to close temporarily due to an influx of sea lions, emphasizing the importance of respecting these protected creatures as per federal regulations.
The city authorities emphasized that visitors must adhere to the law and avoid any actions that could harm or disturb the sea lions. It is crucial to ensure the safety and protection of these animals, especially in areas where they congregate.
